Santander will cut its network to just 349 in the latest blow to high street banking We examine the complete list of 95 bank branches impacted by the announcement made today
Santander has announced the closure of 95 bank branches across the UK, putting 750 jobs at risk.
Only 349 branches will remain in the bank's network, down from 444. Of these, 36 will have shortened hours and 18 will no longer have counters.
According to the bank, the areas impacted by the closures will be covered by new Community Bankers. In addition to working in nearby banking hubs, these staff members will offer weekly in-person money management and general customer support.
Santander stated that it would improve its mobile banking services in addition to the closures, with upgrades anticipated for its chat service, app, and phone banking features.
Additionally, the bank announced that it will keep running its new Work Cafes, coffee shops where patrons can reserve meeting rooms, use co-working spaces, and access banking services.
This concept has been brought to five locations so far, with another location set to be announced by the bank soon.
Earlier this year, Lloyds Banking Group announced that certain Lloyds, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland branches would close. These changes come after a broader trend of bank branch closures.
What is causing Santander to close its branches?
Santander says expanded online banking capabilities have rapidly changed how customers prefer to access banking services the bank reports seeing a 63 percent increase in digital transactions since 2019.
According to the report, 82 percent of new current Santander accounts are opened online, meaning that the great majority of new customers are opting not to open accounts in branches.
According to the bank, the number of transactions through mobile banking apps has increased by 89%, while the number of users of mobile banking has increased by 56%.
Santander UK's spokesperson stated that the company's goal is to "provide the right balance" between its in-person and online banking services.
It is imperative that the company "move with customers and balance our investment across all the places where we interact with customers," they said.
"Closing a branch is always a very difficult decision and we spend a great deal of time assessing where and when we do this and how to minimise the impact it may have on our customers," they added.
Where is Santander closing branches in the UK?
Instead of being concentrated in a single region of the UK, the bank closures are dispersed throughout the nation.
According to Santander, 93% of the UK will still reside within 10 miles of a bank branch even after it closes 95 more locations.
