Home movers should see if they have credit stuck in old accounts, according to energy regulator Ofgem
Energy consumers are being encouraged by Ofgem to check if they are due a portion of 240 million in unclaimed credit.
The regulator claims that there is still credit in 10.9 million closed accounts that needs to be refunded, potentially amounting to over £100 per household.
When someone moves or switches suppliers, over 90% of closed account balances are automatically refunded, according to trade association Energy UK.
However, this isn't always feasible if suppliers don't have the customers' updated address or contact information.
Additionally, if a customer cancels the direct debit for their energy bills, the supplier will no longer have their bank account information to credit their account.
For energy customers who have moved within the last five years, it is advised that they check their emails and letters for final bills and get in touch with their supplier if they believe they are being owed money. Additionally, they can access their previous energy accounts.
"It's understandable that some things will be missed because moving requires a lot of life administration," stated Tim Jarvis, director general for retail at Ofgem.
However, the message is clear: if you have moved within the last five years, get in touch with your previous supplier, give them the right information, and you might be eligible for a refund. This is because there are currently nearly 2 million closed accounts in credit.
Suppliers must provide a final bill within six weeks of an energy account being closed, and any refund must be issued within ten working days, according to Ofgem regulations.
Energy companies, however, are not always able to accomplish this due to missing customer information, and credit may remain in accounts.
The CEO of TotallyMoney, Alastair Douglas, stated: "If you don't have your old bills, you can check your old account by having your old supplier contact you with the correct information and your details. An address should be sufficient.
"No matter how long ago the account was closed, they must reimburse you if they do owe you money.
While some individuals may only owe a few pounds, others may owe over 100, which could be helpful in the winter when energy costs and bills are higher.
