The hustle and bustle of a nearby town, however, can make commuting to work more alluring. We examine the best commuter towns in the United Kingdom.

With greater average salaries, more employment options, and a plethora of leisure activities, living in a city has undoubtedly advantages.

In London, the average salary is approximately £44,356, whereas average salaries in other regions are significantly lower. It is approximately 37,430 on a national average.

But there are some disadvantages. Cities typically have far higher average home prices than smaller towns and villages.

According to Halifax's most recent house price index, the average price of a home in the UK was 298,237 in July; however, the average price of a home in London is 539,914.

In order to benefit from the opportunities and pay that cities offer, as well as the peace and quiet that comes with living outside of them, many people decide to live in commuter towns.

New research, however, has revealed that not all commuter towns are created equal.

Pepper Money has revealed the top commuter towns in the UK by ranking 66 of the most well-liked commuter towns based on factors like median salaries, quality of life, population, commute time and cost, rent prices, and house affordability.

Based on Pepper Money's calculations, Rotherham is the best commuter town in the UK. It's only a 17-minute train ride to Sheffield.

The market town's average annual salary is £34,258, which is slightly less than the 37,430 national average. With average rents of 653 and home prices of 193,000, the area is reasonably priced to establish a home.

The hub city of Sheffield is served by Dronfield, the second-best commuter town. It is even closer to the city than Rotherham, being only 11 minutes away by train.

The average cost of a home in Dronfield is 301,037, and the rent is £1,074 per month. However, at 35,713, the town does boast a marginally higher median income.

Among the UK's top commuter towns, Beeston, which serves the hub city of Nottingham, comes in third. The train from the city takes about six minutes.

The median salary in Beeston is 38,535, which is slightly higher than the national average, and the average cost of a home is 295,260.

None of the ten best commuter towns listed by Pepper Money serve London, which is by far the biggest city in the United Kingdom.

Because of the high cost of housing in the capital, London's commuter towns have a low affordability rating.
