Shares of Taiwan Semiconductor rise on the prospect of AI
Nvidia's main supplier, TSMC, has outperformed its competitors in terms of earnings and rejected the idea that there is an AI bubble

Shares of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (NYSE:TSM), also known as TSMC, opened 4.8 percent higher on January 15 in response to an earnings beat and an unusually optimistic outlook for the artificial intelligence (AI) industry.

TSMC's earnings exceeded analysts' expectations of £2.53 by rising 35% year over year to £3.14 per share.

In comparison to projections of £32.9 billion, revenue increased by 25.5 percent to £33.7.

Even though these numbers are impressive, the market was more interested in TSMC's forward guidance.

According to Matt Britzman, senior equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, "Cloud giants are already knocking on its door to offer any help they can to secure future capacity, and management sees AI demand growing at an eye-popping 5559 percent annually through 2029." "TSMC is moving forward with fabrication build-outs in Taiwan and the US, speeding up its expansion into Arizona, and purchasing additional land for cutting-edge packaging to support that confidence. A "

Strong demand for TSMC's products is a good indicator of overall demand for AI due to the company's central role in the AI ecosystem.

The management of the company is known for exercising caution when providing future direction. According to Britzman, "they see a durable runway for AI demand stretching well into the next decade based on this aggressive build-out."

As a result, the forward guidance is a powerful argument against the claim that AI stocks are in an impending bubble.

While broader US stocks were muted, the Nasdaq 100, which is dominated by tech and AI stocks, opened 1.2 percent higher on January 15. The SandP 500, on the other hand, opened 0.4 percent lower.

What is TSMC's role?

Taiwan Semiconductor is a "fab" (short for "fabrication") company that produces semiconductors. Put differently, it produces the chips designed by companies such as AMD and Nvidia.

The production of computer chips, particularly the state-of-the-art ones used for artificial intelligence, is highly technologically sophisticated. Only a small number of businesses can produce chips using the most sophisticated 2nm process, including TSMC. Most people agree that it is the world's top producer of AI chips.

This gives it a monopoly-like position in the production of AI chips. The majority of the major players in the industry are fiercely competing with one another to create the best products; they cannot afford to skimp on the building blocks.

Thus, TSMC is subtly driving the AI revolution even though it has always been one of the unsung heroes. As a result, some experts have referred to it as the world's most significant corporation.

Britzman stated, "These results aren't just good for TSMC; they're a roadmap for where the next leg of AI investment is headed."
