Experts Call for Enhancing Use of AI in Health Sector

Local and international Artificial lntelligence (AI) and health experts recommended the necessity of enhancing standards, governance and policies related to AI in the health sector.

The experts further called for facilitating investments in various sources through the global expertise community, and implementing sustainable models of AI applications in the health field at the international level.

This came at the conclusion of the first meeting of the Global Initiative on Artificial Intelligence for Health Purposes ↗.

The event was organized by the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology at its headquarters from October 30 to November 2, 2023 AD, in partnership with the World Health Organization, the International Telecommunication Union, and the World Intellectual Property Organization.

An elite group of local and international experts  in the fields of artificial intelligence and health attended the meeting.

Experts’ Recommendations

The experts called for the establishment of a special system for artificial intelligence in the health field concerned with defining regulations and laws, building a database and sources of information for the systems and laws related to artificial intelligence.

They stressed the importance of the correct practice of artificial intelligence techniques in the health ↗ fields to ensure the safety and security of health information, the establishment of an information center “Hub” to exchange Data and expertise among specialists and those interested in the fields of artificial intelligence.

Meeting Objectives

The first meeting of the Global Initiative on Artificial Intelligence for health, which lasted four days, aimed to exchange knowledge between organizations and experts in using Al for health purposes, set standards and policies for emerging technologies in the field of health, and build sustainable models for health systems using AI.

Winners of Ideathon competition

The meeting’s proceedings included the Ideathon competition, in which several projects participated.

The smart doctor’s note project (ADDIMEMOR) from Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University won first place, and Leen Company’s project to use AI to build a digital twin came in second place.

In third place came (Poiso-AI) project which  is a database to support the poison center using AI from Princess Noura bint Abdul Rahman University.

Topics Discussed During Meeting

The meeting sessions discussed ways to improve care, make health decisions by using AI, and detect bias in its models.

The sessions also discussed AI’s ethics and governance in health sector, patents for artificial intelligence in medical and life science technologies, regulatory considerations for AI in health, and challenges.

Participants discussed the impact of AI on innovation in health technologies. They further discussed supporting innovators in facing challenges, and setting technical standards and policies regarding AI in the field of health.
